Swiss VAT liability
Value added tax (VAT) is a charge that is paid by the person purchasing a product or service. In Switzerland, the VAT rate is determined by the sector of activity.
- 7.7% is the standard rate for most goods and services
- 2.5% is the reduced rate for essential goods such as food and medicines
- 3.3% is the special rate that applies to the hotel sector
It is important to note that some activities such as education and health are exempt from VAT. For more information, please contact our experts.
Am I liable to VAT?
Any company that exceeds an annual turnover of CHF 100,000 is subject to VAT. This rule also applies to individual companies. Non-profit associations must apply VAT if their turnover exceeds CHF 150’000.
Legal entities and physical persons who are subject to VAT must register with the Federal Tax Administration (FTA).
When do I have to register my commercial activity with the FTA ?
In Switzerland, it is compulsory to register as a taxable entity as soon as your projected turnover reaches CHF 100,000 during the fiscal year in which you operate. Once this figure has been reached, you have 30 days to register with the FTA and and obtain your VAT registration number.
In addition, if you have just started your business and have not yet reached an annual turnover of CHF 100,000, voluntary taxation may be a good option. Indeed, such a proactive approach allows you to reclaim the VAT on the products and services you purchased when you started your business.
